PS4 Remote Play lets you stream games and other services from your PS4 to your Sony Xperia.
Ever wish you could play a game on your PS4 without using the TV? Well, that’s what PS4 Remote Play lets you do if you have a PS4, a DualShock 3 or 4 controller and a Sony Xperia smartphone or tablet. It does help to have a stand or a controller-mounted cradle for your Xperia, but other than that, this app requires very little to work. Simple download it, run it and go.
The app works by streaming games from your PS4 console to your phone, and generally, you’ll do this via a local Wi-Fi network in your home. It is possible to stream via the Internet, but most probably aren’t going to achieve a playable experience that way. Be mindful that this does add some input latency, and sensitivity to that will vary from one player to next and differently depending on the game. Also, games will run at 30 fps at best, and playing Call of Duty multiplayer this way, for instance, may not be ideal.
This app requires a Sony Xperia device. This isn’t a technical limitation but rather one enforced by Sony to presumably spur Xperia sales. On one hand, Sony is in the business of making money, and this is understandable. On the other hand, this approach doesn’t align well with a brand that has positioned itself “for the gamers” since its announcement. Nevertheless, if you have an Xperia, this is a great little app when someone else wants the TV or you’re in a part of your home without one.
